The death of a three-year-old girl, after she was knocked down by a vehicle at Toafom in the Bosomtwe District of Ashanti Region, has sparked anger among residents.
Little Tiffany Antwiwaa died at the Pramso Saint Michael Catholic Hospital after she was hit by a bus in a convoy of district co-ordinating directors attending a colleague's funeral at Worakese.
The bus, which belongs to the Jachie Pramso Senior High School is said to have hit little Tifafany as she tried to cross the road.
The nursery pupil of the Toafom D/A Primary School was apparently crossing the road under no adult supervision when the accident occurred.
The incident has thrown the entire community into mourning as the family supports Tiffany's 7-month-old pregnant mother to bury her second daughter.
It brings to three the number of pedestrian knockdowns since the beginning of this year in the town.
Last year two people were knocked down in the same community.
Residents say drivers over-speed on that stretch of road - the Kuntenase-Bekwai Road.
They accuse the Ghana Highway Authority of failing to respond to repeated appeals to erect speed ramps to check overspeeding.
Angry youth of the town have vowed to erect the rumps, whether or not they get from the Highway Authority approval.
Secretary of the Unit Committee George Offe-Agyapong is leading the youth in the area to erect the speed ramps to check speeding.
“Three people were hit by a car and one has died. Because of what we have seen since two years ago, we want authorities to take action and that is why we appealed to the Feeder Roads to construct the speed ramps. We are going to construct artificial ones so that the speed of the vehicles would be limited”, Mr Offe-Agyapong revealed.
District Chief Executive for Bosomtwe, Veronica Antwi-Adjei, who visited the bereaved family urged restraint from the people, warning any attempt by the people to construct the ramps will be deemed illegal.
“It [speed rump] needs urgent attention but you know the district assembly cannot do it. We have advised them to wait until the Highway Authorities come. If they take the law into their own hands, it would be a problem”, she warned.
Madam Antwi-Adjei also urged the Urban Roads Department to respond to the concerns of the people.
Meanwhile, police have launched investigations into the accident. The driver of the vehicle that knocked the girl has been detained.
