Ghanaian Investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas shares his findings on abuse at an Orphanage in Winneba on the Super Morning Show
My investigative work took me to an orphanage in Winneba. It was a well endowed orphanage with a farm and received donations from the likes of Becca and Archbishop Palmer-Buckle. Many of the donations were sold to customers including SHS students. This left inadequate food for the orphans. The orphans were made to go on mandatory 2 week fasts and in the evenings, they would be given water. Clothes donations were also regularly sold by the caretaker. When the bales arrived, the caretaker hardly ever opened them, and sold just about everything. The clothes the children wore weren't good enough.
Some of the things I saw in the orphanage were so violent. I thought I wasn't in Ghana. Some of the caregivers would beat the children up for nothing. They would use their hands and legs on the children for no reason. One of the orphans, an SHS graduate was acting as a doctor, giving injections to some of the other orphans. The money the caretaker made from selling the donations to the orphanage have all gone into her pocket. It is clear to me that some people are setting up orphanages just to fill their pockets.
It's not just about publishing a story; it's also about getting the needed impact so the children don't continue to suffer.
