Faure Gnassingbe declared winner of Togo elections

By Philip Otuo,

Faure Gnassingbe has won the Togo elections held on Saturday, according to the electoral commission.

Gnassingbe garnered about 59% of the vote to be re-elected for a third term. He has been in power since 2005 after taking over from his father Gnassingbe Eyadema.

His late father took power in a coup in 1967.

Parliament is required to approve the results per the country’s constitution.

Turnout was around 50%, according to Reuters news agency.

The 2005 elections, which brought Mr Gnassingbe to power, were overshadowed by fraud allegations and violent protests which left at least 400 people dead.

African Union observers have described the election as free and fair, despite opposition complaints of voting irregularities.
